[-Wunused-but-set-variable]

fec.c:1013:8: warning: variable 'rdreg' set but not used
[-Wunused-but-set-variable]

Note: The code was slightly rearranged, but no functional changes
attempted, i. e. no conversion to use I/O accessors.
